Perspectives

The playbook is public. The access is not.

Filings by the largest shareholders in the market describe a familiar pattern: equity pledged, credit extended, shares retained. The strategy is a matter of public record. What has never been evenly distributed is access to it.

A matter of public record

Proxy statements and disclosure filings at some of the most widely held companies in the world have long described personal credit facilities secured by founder and executive equity. The names are familiar, and the arrangements are routine. Read together, they describe a settled institutional practice rather than an exception: significant shareholders finance their lives and ventures against their holdings instead of unwinding them.

Why the largest holders rarely sell

A sale is permanent. It surrenders future appreciation, alters voting weight, and enters the public record where the market reads it as a statement of conviction. Financing against a position leaves ownership, upside, and governance intact while the capital need is met. Where the choice is available, the most sophisticated holders consistently make the same one — and this is how they build generational wealth: fortunes that compound in shares that are never sold, while life and ventures are financed around them.

Where the access gap sits

The gap is not one of strategy but of coverage. Leadership and significant shareholders at small- and mid-cap companies are frequently told their position is too concentrated, the float too thin, or the terms too restrictive to be practical. The default counsel becomes a sale, with everything a sale costs. The strategy the largest holders use is not unavailable to them; it has simply not been offered.

Parity, arranged privately

Stockbridge Capital Partners is a private network of Wall Street insiders and veterans. Our focus is precisely this underserved position: principals and advisers at small- and mid-cap public companies who deserve the same institutional structures, the same discretion, and the same outcome as the largest holders in the market. Structures are built around the position and shared only in a private conversation.

Private inquiry

This is how generational wealth is built — without selling. If your position sits outside large-cap coverage, the outcome need not.
